We talk a lot about bridal getting-ready photos. The dress, the hair, the champagne with your girls.
But what about the grooms?
This is one of my favorite moments to capture at a wedding in France. The suits, the laughter, the “is my bow tie straight?” panic 2 minutes before the ceremony.
As a wedding planner in France, I always tell couples: don’t skip groom getting-ready coverage. Here’s why + how to do it right.
Why Groom Getting Ready Photos Matter
1. It completes the story
Your wedding day has two sides. If we only photograph the bride getting ready, we’re missing half the morning.
2. The light + location is often amazing
So many French venues have these gorgeous suites with big windows and balcony views. Like this one. The natural light here is better than any studio.
3. The emotions are real
This is when the nerves hit. When the best man gives a pep talk. When your dad helps with your cufflinks. You’ll want those photos.
4. It buys you time
While hair and makeup finishes, the guys can be photographed too. It keeps your timeline smooth.
5 Tips to Get the Best Groom Getting Ready Photos
1. Choose a Room with Good Light
Ask your venue: “Where do the grooms get ready?” Look for big windows, high ceilings, and a view. That French countryside in the background? Chef’s kiss. Avoid dark hotel bathrooms. We want champagne and sunlight, not fluorescent lights.
2. Add the Details
Just like the bride’s details, photograph the groom’s too.
– Watch
– Cufflinks
– Shoes
– Boutonniere
– Bottle of champagne
– Invitation suite
Lay them out on the dresser before the guys arrive.
3. Plan the “Moments”
Tell your photographer to watch for:
– The bow tie being tied
– First sip of champagne together
– Putting on jackets
– The group laugh before heading out
– That last look in the mirror
These are the photos that feel like you.
4. Keep It Timed Right
Don’t do getting-ready photos 3 hours before the ceremony.
I recommend: 60-90 min before you need to leave. Enough time to be relaxed, not so much time that everyone is bored.
5. Let Them Actually Enjoy It
This is not the time for super posed shots.
Hand them champagne. Let them joke around. The best photos happen when they forget the camera is there. Like in this photo.
What About Venues in France?
Most chateaux and villas in France have separate getting-ready suites for the groom. Some even have a little bar area. Use it.
If you’re getting married in Paris, ask your hotel for a suite with a view. The Haussmann windows make incredible photos.
How de France Events Helps
I build getting-ready time into your timeline for both of you.
I scout the rooms ahead of time, make sure the details are styled, and coordinate with your photographer so no moment is missed.
And yes, I’ll make sure there’s cold champagne waiting.

Final Thought
Your wedding photos shouldn’t just be about the dress. They should be about the morning. The people. The anticipation.
Don’t let the groom’s side of the story go untold.
